OUR FAMILY OF THE SUN
known to most as Deepakbhai, aka Brother Deepak, is an environmental and social entrepreneur. His earlier career path was one of business and profit but, after marrying Malaysian native Shirin Gadhia and re-aligning his world vision to hers, Deepak shifted gears and has become one of the leading proponents of Concentrated Solar Thermal technology in the world. His solar thermal energy systems - mostly based on the flexible parabolic dish system developed by Wolfgang Scheffler in Germany - have been installed across India, and even now are expanding into Europe and Africa. Deepak's passion and leadership has nurtured scores of young environmental engineers and is a big reason this family has come forward and grown.

was notably the first successful open heart surgery patient in India, getting press and notoriety from an early age. From then, 'Didi' has achieved multiple successes in a variety of social welfare projects while overcoming gender norms and health issues, becoming an essential voice in the fields of sustainability, solar cooking, and the welfare & education of Tribal women. She continues to educate & demonstrate to entire communities about the value of sustainable, plastic-free, carbon-neutral living. She uses solar cookers and dryers to cook food and process the organic vegetables grown at her home, aka The Jimmy McGilligan Center for Sustainability. Along with her late husband, Irishman Jimmy McGilligan, Janak is a founding member of our Family of the Sun. Dr. Ajay Chandak is a passionate researcher and promoter in the field of renewable energy and sustainability, with a special interest in clean cooking technologies. He likely owns India's only privately operated R&D unit in Dhule. He has designed and commercialized many renewable energy systems, the most praiseworthy of which are his PRINCE designs of solar cookers, which are available in different sizes and can cook for a family of 4 to a few hundred people. At home, he uses solar cookers, a biogas plant, solar water heaters, a solar rooftop system for electricity, and all energy-efficient devices. He has worked with the United Nations, MNRE, and Oxford University as a consultant and as a director and board member with the International Solar Energy Society Freiburg and SESI in India. He is a global advisor for Solar Cookers International. He specializes in training and mentoring entrepreneurs in renewable energy, and many of his trainees are successful entrepreneurs.
